IMPHAL: In a strange incident in Kangpokpi district of Manipur, locals witnessed continuous flames emerging from beneath the ground and burning since past 6 days.

According to the reports, the fire from the ground was first spotted on Sunday 13 March in Kangchup Makhom Village which falls under Manipur's Kangpokpi district.

The District Administration on Saturday 19 March reached the spot for inspection after receiving a number of reports from the area regarding flames emanating from the ground.

Locals informed that after the weird ground fire was first seen on Sunday and it has been continuously burning for over a week till today causing the nearby banana trees to get damaged.

The villagers also expressed their fear that if the fire continues like this then over 3000 Banana trees that cost Rupees 3 lakh will get affected.

They said that there will be massive consequences affecting the Banana farm if required measures are not taken to stop the fire as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, after the inspection in the region, the officials came out with certain predictions about the strange flames occurring from the ground.

While addressing the media, the Sub-divisional officer of Kangchup Geljang village, T Opendra Singh informed that the emerging fire from the ground is probably a biomass ignition.

According to concerned officials, this biomass ignition is discharged in different areas in banana farms located in the vicinity of Kangchup Makhom village.

The SDO further stated that due to these flames spreading over the region, a wide area of the farm has been already affected.

He said that necessary measures will be soon taken to prevent further loss and the effect on banana trees from the sudden and natural occurrence of flames.

Meanwhile, a detailed report has been initiated over the matter which will be forwarded to the higher officials raising concern over the ground fire so that needed actions are taken.
