SHILLONG: Lt. Gen. Vikas Lakhera, Director General of Assam Rifles, in a strong message of hope and reconciliation, lauded the recent surge in weapon and ammunition surrenders across Manipur. He asserted, “If people give up guns and take the path of peace, bid by bid normalcy will come and the initiative of Government of India are there for all to see. Today I think Northeast is much more integrated than it was earlier and the steps taken by the government in that direction.” When asked, he said, “Law and order is the state subject, it’s the subject by the police. AFSPA has been removed from many places so the situation in Northeast is much better than it was earlier.” Highlighting the promise of the region’s youth and the Assam Rifles’ role in empowering them, the DG said, “Northeast is the most talented part of the country, I will not say that the youths are getting misguided, I think the youths of today are well educated, they are aspiring to make their future bright, they work very hard.” He added that Assam Rifles runs seven Centres of Excellence offering free coaching for medical and engineering entrance exams across Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, South Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram.
