KSO suspends 'Manipur bandh' plans over move to delete Kukis from ST list

IMPHAL: The proposed 48-hour State-wide bandh called by the Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO) from midnight of March 25 was suspended.

The development took place after a meeting between officials of the State government and representatives of the students' body at the office of the Minister of Tribal Affairs & Hills Minister Vungzagin Valte here on Thursday.

KSO general secretary Thanglenmang Simte said that the meeting was held at the invitation of the State government. During the meeting, the KSO reiterated their standpoint not to accept any decision to delete 'Any Kuki Tribes' (AKT) from the ST (Scheduled Tribe) list of Manipur.

After a long and detailed discussion, the State government acknowledged the genuineness of the KSO's demand and requested the students' body to put on hold their agitation until the next Cabinet meeting, to be held within a short period, said Simte.

"Considering the seriousness of the State government to favourably resolve the KSO's demand, the proposed 48-hour bandh has been temporarily suspended," said Simte in a statement.

However Simte added that the KSO would resort to agitation if the government fails to consider their demand and decides to delete Kuki tribes from the ST list. (Agencies)
