IMPHAL: Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, strongly denounced the alleged firing incident recently carried out by Kuki militants in the Sanasabi and Thamnapokpi areas of Imphal East.

The violent episode that unfolded on Wednesday, December 27 resulted in several civilians and security personnel injured, increasing concern regarding regional safety and peace.

Taking to social media platform X, Singh condemned the attack as "a cowardly and unprovoked assault on innocent lives." He termed it a major threat to fragile peace and harmony in the region. He pledged to deploy additional security forces to the affected zones to restore order.

Singh also clarified that medical care is being properly provided to the injured people and encouraged the public not to get panicked and fragmented during such a testing time. Further, he made it evident that there needs to be better coordination among state police and central forces so such incidents are prevented in the future.

Tensions have gripped the peripheral areas of Sanasabi and Yaingangpokpi in Imphal East as intermittent attacks from Kangpokpi hilltops continue. Armed miscreants have reportedly used explosive devices and gunfire, targeting Meitei-inhabited areas.

The attacks have been continuous and have resulted in heavy cross-firing between the attackers and security forces, who are retaliating actively to control the situation. Some residents have run away from their homes in response to the violence, seeking shelter in safer places. The authorities are on high alert, with increased security measures to protect civilians and ensure that the situation does not deteriorate further.

Police reports confirmed that at least two people, including a policeman, were injured in the shootout. The gun-and-bomb attacks by the armed men from the hills provoked a fierce encounter with the security forces in Sanasabi and Thamnapokpi villages.

An officer sustained a bullet wound in the left shoulder. He has been identified as 37-year-old K. Haridash. He was taken to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment at around 3:30 PM. The volatility in the region is gradually increasing, and it can be seen that law enforcers are facing problems maintaining the peace.

The December 27 attack calls for much-increased security and concerted efforts from the government to redress the root causes of the violence in Manipur. While the government responded through additional deployments and assurances, the safety of civilians, as well as peace-restoration efforts, continue to be paramount.
