IMPHAL: The Manipur government on Sunday extended the suspension of mobile internet services in nine districts of the state till December 3, aiming to maintain public order amid ongoing tensions.

An order from the Home Department confirmed that mobile internet and data services, including VSATs and VPNs, will remain suspended in the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Pherzawl, and Jiribam.

This measure follows the suspension of internet services on November 16 after widespread violence broke out due to the discovery of three women’s bodies in the Jiri River in Manipur and three children’s bodies in the Barak River in Assam.

“The state government, after reviewing the prevailing law and order situation and its correlation with the general operation of internet services, has decided to continue the suspension of mobile internet and mobile data services, including VSATs and VPN services, in the territorial jurisdiction of Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, and Kangpokpi, Pherzawl, and Jiribam of Manipur till 5:15 pm of December 3, in public interest,” the order stated.

However, broadband services (ILL and FTTH) were conditionally restored on November 19 to mitigate the impact on healthcare, education, and administrative offices.

To prevent misuse, the government mandated that subscribers adhere to authorized connections only, prohibiting the use of WiFi or hotspots.
