IMPHAL: The Manipur government announced on Tuesday that the suspension of mobile internet would be extended for two more days in nine districts, until December 5.

A notice from the Home Department stated that the suspension would remain in effect in the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Pherzawl, and Jiribam until 5:15 pm on December 5.

"The state government after reviewing the prevailing law and order situation and its correlation with the general operation of internet services has decided to continue suspension of mobile internet and mobile data services, including VSATs and VPN services...,” it stated.

Internet services have been temporarily suspended since November 16, following violence that erupted in the state after the bodies of three women and three children were found in the Jiri and Barak rivers in Manipur and Assam, respectively.

On November 19, the Manipur government partially lifted the suspension on broadband services (ILL and FTTH) to alleviate the difficulties faced by the general public, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and other offices.

Meanwhile, this development comes in the wake of the Manipur government further extending the suspension of internet services in nine districts for two more days. The order was issued by the state's Home Department based on apprehensions about the law and order situation in the region.

This order affects Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Pherzawl, and Jiribam. These districts will not have access to mobile internet, mobile data, VSATs, and VPN services. It said the step was undertaken in public interest to continue preventing disturbances.
