IMPHAL: The police in Manipur have arrested five people, including two cadres of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), on charges of extortion and abduction.

The arrests were during an operation carried out in the valley districts of the state. During the arrest, in addition to arresting them, law enforcement agencies seized huge weapons and materials from the accused, such as a revolver, five pistols, four detonators, and a two-wheeler, which is suspected to have been used for criminal activities.

The first arrest was made in Bishnupur district, where police apprehended an active member of the KCP-People's War Group (KCP-PWG). The cadre, identified as 34-year-old Wairokpam Naoba Meitei from Phoijing Teramakhong in Bishnupur, was taken into custody in the Nambol Khoriphaba area.

Police reports claim that Naoba was extorting money from shopkeepers and residents in the Nambol area. On arrest, a two-wheeler and a mobile phone had been recovered from him.

From the details obtained from Naoba's interrogation, police launched a follow-up operation that resulted in the arrest of another KCP member. The second man, Wahengbam Ramananda, alias Rousow and Luwangamba, is a member of the Kangleipak Communist Party (Military Council), or KCP (MC). Further investigations are being carried out to establish more details about his involvement in the extortion racket and to identify other associates.

This series of arrests represents one of the most important advancements in anti-insurgency activities in Manipur. They target critical members of the proscribed KCP, degrade the group's extortion mechanism, and increase the place's security. An effort has been made to bring everyone on board for justice and help maintain peace in the aggrieved districts.
