IMPHAL: In a recent development in Thoubal, Manipur, police detained four laborers for allegedly violating the state’s Inner Line Permit (ILP) system.

The individuals, identified as Afsar Ali, Md. Sanfaraj, Md. Rahamtullah, and Sahabaj Alam, were discovered working at the Yairipok Bishnunaha water reservoir construction site without valid ILP cards. These laborers, all hailing from Uttar Dinajpur district in West Bengal, had reportedly overstayed in the state.

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh confirmed the detention through a Twitter announcement, stating that strict action would be taken against the violators. He also said that the process of deportation from the state would be initiated as part of the legal process.

The ILP system is an essential regulatory framework in Manipur and protects the demographic composition and the cultural heritage of the state. It provides for advance permission for non-locals to enter and stay in some northeastern states, which include Manipur. The measure is designed to safeguard the interests of residents.

In his statement, the Chief Minister urged employers, contractors, and residents to cooperate with authorities to uphold the ILP regulations. He further emphasized that collective responsibility would prevent violations and maintain the integrity of the system.

The authorities are therefore moving with the legal process to deal with the case, yet again, showing that there is a commitment to maintaining the ILP system appropriately.
