IMPHAL: Thousands of Kuki-Zo community members gathered in Saikul Hill Town, Kangpokpi, to observe the 19th Remembrance Day, dedicated to honoring those they call “martyrs” who lost their lives in the ongoing regional conflicts.
Organized by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), alongside Kuki Inpi Saikul Gamkai, KSO Saikul, and KWU Saikul, the event was more than just a memorial—it was a call for justice and political recognition.
Across Sadar Hills, the day was marked with shuttered schools, businesses, and institutions, reflecting the gravity of the occasion. Yet, life did not come to a complete standstill; vehicles continued to move, ensuring that essential activities carried on.
Amid prayers and speeches, a clear message emerged: the Kuki-Zo community’s demand for Union Territory (UT) status with a legislature must no longer be ignored. Leaders framed this demand as a "Christmas gift" they hoped the Government of India would finally deliver.
CoTU General Secretary Lamminlun Singsit, in his speech, stated that, "This Remembrance Day is not just about honoring our 'martyrs' but also about asserting our resolve for political justice. We have waited long enough; it is time for the Centre to fulfill our rightful aspiration."
The frustration among the community was palpable, as leaders voiced their growing impatience with the government’s inaction. Yet, the atmosphere was also one of unity and determination, with a collective pledge to keep pushing until their voices are heard and their demands are met.
