IMPHAL: In a massive counter-insurgency drive, Manipur Police nabbed two active cadres of the outlawed People's Liberation Army (PLA), the militant organization of the outlawed Revolutionary People's Front (RPF).
The drive was conducted in Imphal West district's north area, an attempt of another step by the state to reduce insurgency.
Official reports say that commandos of the Imphal West district police conducted a quick operation on the basis of intelligence inputs at a suspected hideout close to Pheiding Crossing, which lies at the boundary of Imphal West and Kangpokpi districts. The operation on Monday proved effective as two top operatives of the outlawed PLA/RPF group were apprehended.
The arrested persons have been named as Kharaijam Ronald Singh (37) and Takhellambam Surjit Sharma (39). Two mobile handsets, a wallet with Rs. 130, and a four-wheeler were recovered by the police during the raid. The arrested persons and the recovered items were taken into police custody for further legal action.
The People's Liberation Army (PLA) was established on September 25, 1978, by N. Bisheshwar Singh with the aim of reclaiming Manipur's lost sovereignty. The insurgent organization has been engaged in guerrilla warfare as part of the ongoing insurgency in Manipur.
The merger of the state with the Indian Union in 1949 has been a point of contention for different militant groups, including the PLA, which continues to defy Indian rule through armed struggle.
