IMPHAL: Manipur Police arrested on 21 December a leader of the People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK)-Pro for alleged involvement in extortion activities across different districts, including Kakching, Thoubal, Imphal West and Imphal East.

On specific intelligence inputs, the police launched an operation and apprehended the accused person, identified as 49-year-old Salam Dhananjoy Singh alias Muba Singh, a resident of Hiyanglam Awang Leikai in Kakching district, who was reportedly targeting the general public for extortion.

During the operation, the police seized two mobile phones from the suspect, which are expected to provide some crucial leads in the on-going investigation. The police said that they are now trying to trace his network and identify other people who are involved with him.

In another case, security forces caught another person on December 20 at Torbung Bazar in Churachandpur district. The arrested accused was 27-year-old Jamkhomang Haokip, who was carrying a pistol. The police believe that the arrested accused has some links with the crime world or insurgent network and is probing him further.

Both the cases reflect the increasing vigil of Manipur's security forces in curbing extortion and other crimes. The incident is under investigation, and the officials are in an effort to disband operations of such elements for better public safety in the affected areas.
