Manipur Police Cracks Down Against Insurgent Groups, Arrest Cadres

The Manipur Police have arrested multiple insurgent group members in Imphal for extortion and illegal activities in a major crackdown.

IMPHAL: During a series of joint operations on Sunday, Manipur Police arrested some active members of different insurgent groups in both Imphal West and Imphal East districts. The operations were focused against individuals involved in extortion, arms transportation, and other illicit activities.

Five members of the National Revolutionary Front of Manipur (NRFM) were arrested at Gandhi Avenue, Thangal Bazar, under the jurisdiction of the City Police Station in Imphal West. The arrested individuals include Keisham Robertson Meitei (29), Moirangthem Tanu Devi (21), Nameirakpam Rashini Devi (25), Meikam Ichan Chanu (32), and Laishram Menaka Chanu (27). They are suspected of involvement in extortion and the smuggling of arms and ammunition. In a related operation, Laiphrakpam Soniya Devi (24), another NRFM cadre, was detained from Golapati Masjid Achouba Awang Leirak in Imphal East for allegedly extorting money from the public and government officials.

Two other members of the PREPAK (Pro) group, Chirom Rostam Meitei (25) and Heikrujam Arvind Singh (32), were also arrested in Khongman Nandeibam Leikai on charges of extortion. Another raid resulted in the arrest of three PREPAK (Pro) members at Ima Medhapati School in Imphal West, who were identified as Laishram Boboi Meitei (28), Palujam Babu Singh (25), and Yumnam Athoibi Chanu.

In addition, Sorokhaibam Inaoton Singh (38) and Shandham Romen Singh (39), both associated with the KCP (PWG), were arrested for extortion drives, with incriminating material being seized. Three members of the UPPK group were also arrested by the police for unlawful tribunal activities. These raids reflect the police's intensified efforts to keep insurgent-related criminal operations in check in the state.
