
IMPHAL: In a bid to ramp up efforts against drug trafficking in Manipur, the state police has apprehended 15 individuals suspected to be drug peddlers and users on January 22 during an operation in the North AOC area. The detained individuals included 8 females and 7 males.
The operation, based on reliable information, didn’t find any illegal items. After a thorough check, the detainees were sent to rehabilitation centers for treatment, showing the authorities’ focus on rehabilitation along with enforcement.
Meanwhile, security forces persisted with their routine search operations and area domination exercises in the vulnerable hill and valley district. Efforts were ramped up to ensure the safe passage of essential goods along the state's crucial routes, National Highways 2 and 37. On January 22, 304 vehicles on NH-2 and 233 on NH-37 were escorted under convoy protection.
To increase safety 108 checkpoints have been established in the state covering hills and valleys. Authorities reported that there were no further detentions during the security operation. It highlighted the proactive steps being taken to reduce criminal activity and ensure public safety.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, a 50-bed Centre of Excellence was established at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) to address the growing issue of drug addiction in Meghalaya. The centre was set up under the Drug Reduction, Elimination, and Action Mission (DREAM) initiative conceptualised to make the state drug-free.
The Centre of Excellence, supported by the Centre, provided advanced treatment facilities for drug addicts and served as a model for comprehensive rehabilitation. Additionally, the initiative included active engagement by the deputy commissioners (DCs) with local business leaders to support the establishment and operation of rehabilitation centres.
