SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced on Wednesday that the Defence Ministry has responded positively to the state government's request for land acquisition to facilitate the expansion of Umroi Airport.
Speaking to reporters about his recent visit to New Delhi, Sangma said, “I met the Defence Minister, and we had a detailed discussion on the airport land. As you are aware, certain sections of the extended runway required for the expansion of the Umroi Airport (small acres of land) are under Defence. We have had multiple meetings with the Defence Ministry, and there has been a discussion on how we can proceed. I will explain further details once things become clearer.”
“I received a very positive response from him, and he assured full support in whatever way necessary. The expansion of the runway is crucial to ensure that commercial flights (A320) can land in Shillong at the earliest,” he said.
“We are optimistic about starting the runway expansion soon, and I am confident that within 12 to 15 months, we will see commercial flights landing directly from Delhi at Umroi Airport. This will be a significant game-changer for tourism in Meghalaya,” Sangma added.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for the new Secretariat building at Umsawli, New shillong, on the occasion of the state’s 53rd Statehood Day. The ceremony, attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar, along with Cabinet Ministers Abu Taher Mondal, Ampareen Lyngdoh, Marcuise Marak, and Comingone Ymbon, marked a significant step towards the state’s infrastructural development.
