IMPHAL: Senior Congress leader and former Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh has accused the state government of violating constitutional provisions by not holding the winter session of the state assembly.

Addressing at Congress Bhawan in Imphal on Saturday, Singh said the government inaction and further pointed toward the erosion of democratic practices.

According to Singh, under the constitutional compulsions, the Manipur state must host three assembly sessions each year-the budget session, the autumn session, and the winter session.

At present, however, as the year is approaching the final stages, no winter session has taken place. "The state government is violating the Constitution for it does not abide by it," Singh added while asserting on the severity of the matter.

Memorandums were submitted to the governor, the Speaker, and the chief minister on Friday in order to address the issue. Singh urged these authorities to take swift action, emphasizing that holding the session was crucial for maintaining democratic accountability.

He said, "We are compelled to raise this issue as democratic institutions have failed to function appropriately. As an opposition party, we cannot remain mum if the government fails to discharge its duties and responsibilities.

The comments of the Congress leader have furthered the growing concerns about governance and adherence to constitutional norms in the state, adding to the political discourse in Manipur as the year comes to a close.
