IMPHAL: A massive sit-in protest was staged on National Highway 37 at Sagolband in Manipur, a key route connecting South Assam and Manipur. Organized by the Meira Paibis, a women’s vigilante group, the demonstration entered its second day on Tuesday.

The protest highlighted the deplorable condition of NH-37, particularly in Imphal West district, which has led to frequent traffic congestion, accidents, and vehicle breakdowns.

Protestors blocked the road at Sagolband Takhom, causing significant inconvenience to commuters and transporters. They demanded immediate attention to an 8-kilometer stretch between Sagolband and Langjing Achouba, which has been neglected for months. A protestor criticized the authorities for failing to address the issue despite the road’s critical importance.

The demonstration followed Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla’s meeting with MS Deval, Executive Director of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), at Raj Bhavan on Monday. During the meeting, the governor urged NHIDCL to expedite the ongoing national highway projects across the state.

The Governor provided a detailed overview of the key challenges hindering the projects and emphasized the need for timely completion to improve connectivity in Manipur. The NH-37, a crucial link, remains a significant concern, and the governor has stressed the importance of completing the roadworks within the stipulated timeframe.
