IMPHAL: Six Kuki-Zo militants were apprehended by Tangkhul villagers early this morning between Itham and Tangkhul Hundung under Litan police station. The militants were later handed over safely to Kuki Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
Reports suggest the Kuki-Zo militants were assigned to guard the Phailengmol area in Kangpokpi district.According to the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU), the "Tangkhul militants" physically assaulted the "volunteers," confiscated their vehicles, and seized their personal belongings. However, the militants were released following mediation by a leader of a Tangkhul Hundung civil society organization.
COTU has criticized the Tangkhul militants for breaking the Naga community's neutral position in the ongoing conflict. "The Nagas of Manipur, known for their helpful nature, must stay neutral and hold accountable people within their community, like the Tangkhuls in Hundung and Singkap areas, who are trying to disturb the peace," COTU said.
COTU has given an ultimatum, asking for the culprits to be punished within 24 hours. The group warned that if the culprits are not caught, the Tangkhul Hundung and Singkap areas will be held responsible for any further problems.
The incident shows how delicate the relationships are between different groups in Manipur, where land disputes and ethnic differences have created more divisions. COTU stressed the need for everyone to work together to reduce mistrust and violence, saying this event is a strong reminder of how fragile peace is in the area.
