THOUBAL: In a horrific turn of event, the residence of Askar Ali Makakmayum, the president of the BJP Minority Morcha in Manipur's Thoubal district was stormed and set ablaze by a mob claiming to be from the Muslim community on Sunday evening.

Shortly after Makakmayum voiced his approval of the newly enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, the violent reaction followed. He called on the central government to repeal the legislation and issued an apology in the aftermath.

Earlier, Makakmayum urged the public to refrain from politicizing the Waqf Amendment Bill through a Facebook post, which received President Droupadi Murmu’s assent to become law.

"Do not do politics on the Waqf Amendment Bill. We welcome Bill. We support WAB,” he stated in his Facebook post expressing support for the act while tagging prominent leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, and BJP Minority Morcha national president Jamal Siddiqui.

The mob descended on Makakmayum’s home in Lilong Haoreibi Sambrukhong at around dusk, initially damaging the property before setting it on fire, as per eyewitnesses. As protesters blocked their access to the scene, efforts by the Manipur Fire Service and police to intervene were thwarted.
