Imphal: The student bodies of Manipur condemned the act of Chief Minister N Biren Singh for violating the SOPs for COVID-19 while attending a political campaign. They urged him to focus on framing comprehensive policies for the COVID pandemic.

The COVID positive cases are increasing in the state of Manipur.

Six students bodies of the state staged a joint protest at the community hall of Keishampat Leimajam Leikai on Tuesday. The student bodies: All Manipur Students Union (AMSU), Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Singpanglup (AIMS), Kangleipak Students Association (KSA), Students Union of Kangleipak (SUK) and Manipur Students Federation (MSF) demanded the government to implement 'COVID-19 counter measure policies for the state.'

SUK President H Dhanakumar said that the number of COVID-19 cases is increasing in large numbers in the state. However, instead of focusing on managing the situation, the leaders of the state are busy playing the blame-game. He said that the CM himself is not following any SOPs, and attending campaigns where a large number of people gather. "But on the contrary, he is blaming the public that COVID-19 cases are increasing due to the violation of SOPs by the public. Giving such comments even when he himself is allowing such large political gatherings is highly condemnable," said Dhanakumar and appealed to the government to fulfil their demand.

The government has not taken any important measure to fight the pandemic, instead are more interested in the by-election, added Dhanakumar. The prevailing situation of rising cases in the state has compelled the student bodies to stage the protest.
