131 candidates to contest KHADC polls

SHILLONG: A day after the scrutiny for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) polls scheduled for February 27, the number of candidates who will be contesting the elections are about 131.

Some of the prominent MDC candidates contesting the polls include former KHADC CEM PN Syiem, former MLA and cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh, present MLA of Mylliem constituency Lambor Malngiang, Ronnie V Lyngdoh former Congress cabinet Minister besides others.

There are also a few former NGO leaders who are entering the fray in politics including former KSU general secretary Auguster Jyrwa (Congress) who is contesting the MDC election for the first time from Jaiaw constituency, Marbud Dkhar (Congress) FKJGP president Mawlai beside others.

It may be mentioned that on February 8, during the scrutiny at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, East Khasi Hills district, there were some hiccups as a few opposing candidates had raised issues against their rivals. However, despite this there was no rejection of candidates.

There was also a dispute concerning symbol as both the KHNAM candidate from Jaiaw Strong Kharjana and former State youth wing of KHNAM Thomas Passah are vying for the same symbol.
