SHILLONG: Meghalaya Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh confirmed that immediate steps are being taken to reintegrate the 22 children recently repatriated from Karnataka into the education system. The Department of Education has deployed officers to liaise directly with the children’s parents, ensuring smooth transitions into government-run schools near their residences. “These students left their courses midway. The Education Department has assured us that within two to three days, all necessary formalities will be completed to admit them into nearby government schools,” Lyngdoh stated. In cases where families are migratory, officials will collect updated addresses to place children in schools accordingly. “If they relocate in the future, parents must inform us in advance so we can facilitate a seamless transfer to the next appropriate institution,” he added. The coordinated return of the 22 students was made possible through the dedicated efforts of officials in both Karnataka and Meghalaya, following due legal protocols. The official handover ceremony was held at the Directorate of Social Welfare, Lachumiere, Shillong, by the District Child Protection Unit, Mandya District, Karnataka. Agatha Sangma, Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, was also present during the proceedings, underscoring the state’s commitment to child welfare and educational continuity.
