Shillong: The sight of 25 endangered vultures in Riat Turiem Jaintia Hills recently has given a ray of hope to the forest officials who are attempting to preserve these species in Meghalaya. These vultures, that once hovered and feed on the carcass in different dumping grounds of the State suddenly diminished at a very rapid rate due to anthropogenic activities, stated State Conservator of forest RP Marak during an interaction with The Sentinel.

While census has been carried out by the department, Marak estimated that these creatures could be around 50. Referring to the February 2019 sighting of the 25 birds and their nesting place in Rait Tueriem, the Chief Conservator also informed that in 2017, these species were noticed at Demthring in Jaintia Hills district.

Marak also said that these vultures, that play a major role in the maintenance of the ecology, also have nesting sites in the mentioned area and the people in and around the areas have been sensitized about their importance.
