Guwahati: Amid a steady and alarming rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, the district magistrate has declared three more compounds in the capital city of Shillong as Containment Areas.

The Musa compound and Gopalji compound at Jhalupara and Goenka compound (Kamakhya Complex) opposite Cantonment Beat House have been declared as Containment Areas.

The District Magistrate, East Khasi Hills District, in the order issued on 18th August, 2020, has restricted unregulated entry and exit movement in the affected areas which requires aggressive contact tracing, quarantine, testing, and isolation as well as containment in the interest of the health of the general public against "any possible spread of COVID-19."

The order stated that no persons shall be allowed to move into the containment areas and inhabitants within the containment areas shall not move out and shall strictly remain inside their homes.

Gatherings, events, functions whatsoever of any nature and forms including social, political, religious, economic activities are not allowed, the DC said in the orders.

All shopping establishments shall be closed immediately and supply of essential and medical requirements for purchase will be ensured through various teams formed by the District Administration, it was further notified.

Additionally, all Government and private institutions located within the boundary of the containment areas are to close forthwith till further orders, it was stated.

According to the Orders, the Incident Commander, Zone-IV, will be the Supervising Officer of the Musa compound and Gopalji compound at Jhalupara, while the Incident Commander, Zone-III, will be the Supervising Officer of the Goenka compound (Kamakhya Complex) opposite Cantonment Beat House which is declared as containment areas.

The orders, however, will not apply to health workers and essential workers of Shillong Municipal Board, press including electronic and print media, petrol pumps, and LPG delivery workforce.

The DC in the orders also stated that any violation of the order will entail prosecution under the penal provision of Disaster Management Act, 2005, and IPC.
