Guwahati: A surge in coronavirus cases prompted East Khasi Hills District Magistrate War Nongbri on Wednesday to declare 5 more areas in Shillong as "containment areas" to curb the spread of the dreaded contagion.

The latest containment areas in Shillong are as follows: the house occupied by Sanjita Das and U. Deb in the compound of I. Kharmudai, Riat Laban East, Madan Laban, building of Nevelda Nongrum building and Ram Niwas compound at Pynthorumkhrah-Golflink, and the compound of B. Dohling at Mawkhar Main Road.

Nongbri's order restricts unregulated entry and exit movement in the affected areas from August 26, 2020, onwards. According to Nongbri, these areas "require aggressive contact tracing, quarantine, testing, and isolation as well as containment in the interest of the health of the general public against any possible spread of the COVID-19."

In a related development, the District Magistrate in an order issued has also lifted the containment order from August 26 onwards in the house of B. Marbaniang, Riat Laban East, Madan Laban, and from the cottage of Swarnalata Kutir, House no. 312, C/O Kanai Lal Dey, Near Nepali UP School, Mynsain, Lower Lumparing.

The containment order has lifted based on the contact tracing status and test reports of the high-risk contacts, the communique stated.

It is to be noted that the total active coronavirus cases in the state of Meghalaya stood at 1,168 on Wednesday after forty-nine more persons tested positive for the pathogen.

Director of Health Services (MI), Dr. Aman War said 32, including 23 high-risk contacts, 2 influenza-like illness (ILI) cases, 2 Armed Forces/Paramilitary Forces (AF/PF), 1 severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) case, a returnee, a health worker at the MATI Corona care centre, Mawdiangdiang, 1 Anjalee random sampling test, and a low-risk contact, tested positive in the worst-hit East Khasi Hills district.
