SHILLONG: Social activist Angela Rangad on Monday lodged a complaint with the chairperson of the Meghalaya Lokayukta, regarding the shoddy construction of Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) at Mawlai Mawiong.

In her complaint to the Lokayukta chairperson, Bhalang Dhar, Rangad stated that the building, which is merely a year old, has already developed major cracks and has been leaking, "...Which can only be due to lackadaisical superintendence of the construction by the public servants of State PWD over the contractors and construction agencies of the project," she stated.

Rangad also stated that the Transport Department failed to examine the structural integrity of the construction before the handing over of the project.

She also alleged that the shoddy construction of the ISBT can also be attributed to corrupt practices by the contractors/construction company in executing this public infrastructure project and also conflict of interests in execution of the project.

Rangad has appealed to the Lokayukta to investigate the matter as per the powers outlined in the Meghalaya Lokayukta Act, 2014.

Meanwhile, she also told the Lokayukta that she would like to access the annual return of assets by public servants and their spouses and dependent children of Meghalaya, as mandated by law, from the time the law came into force.

It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya Lokayukta Act, 2014 mandates Asset Declaration and Asset Register of Public Servants of the State.
