Alleged fund misappropriation; Meghalaya BJP targets GHADC and JHADC

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya BJP unit has intensified its criticism against the NPP-led Executive Committee (EC) in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) for their alleged misappropriation of Council funds. While the NPP leadership has denied all the charges leveled by the BJP against the NPP ECs, the State BJP leadership on Saturday stated, "It was not surprising to see leaders running under the cover of 'charges-are-unsubstantiated' and 'allegations-are-baseless'.

Claiming of having substantial proof of the alleged blatant corruption, the state BJP leadership said, "We have submitted all the documents. We demand a CBI inquiry."

Targetting the GHADC, the Meghalaya BJP leaders stated, "Almost 50% of all projects undertaken by the GHADC are only on papers."

On the alleged misutilisation of funds in the JHADC, the junior partner in the State Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) further stated, "The people can also infer the truth from the fact that only after the BJP highlighted the misutilization of funds did the EM of the JHADC came out and accepted that they had paid salaries with money meant for the benefit of the people. Please note that this is a whopping sum of Rs. 20 crores that was diverted."

The State BJP leaders' statement further said, "This 'temporary arrangement' is making a mockery of the funds received under the Central scheme. The EM claims that the repayment of this 'unauthorized loan' is 'conditional' upon receiving money from the State government. There were talks on whether the statements of those who raised the questions have the sanction of the legislators or the Central leadership."

The statement added. "Instead of worrying about whether the State BJP has discussed it with their legislators, or whether the charges have been made with the approval of the Central leadership, etc., it would have really boosted the people's confidence if for once the leaders of the various parties would have raised concern over the corruption that the BJP has unearthed. But as expected, efforts to hoodwink the public and to brush to dirt under the carpet have already begun."
