BJP arrogant; Congress respects NorthEast values: Luizinho Faleiro

SHILLONG: AICC general secretary in charge of Meghalaya, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram, Luizinho Faleiro said the Congress as per the directive of its president Rahul Gandhi took up the cause of stalling the disastrous Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in the Rajya Sabha.

It may be pointed out that Gandhi had met representatives of various student organizations and other civil society groups and had assured them that the Congress will always protect the rights and identities of the people of the Northeast.

“The people of Northeast cherish certain values which are intrinsic to their culture, identity and tradition and the Congress party understands and respects these values and will leave no stone unturned to protect them,” Faleiro said.

However, the AICC leader pointed out that, on the other hand, BJP president Amit Shah despite the popular sentiment against the Bill in the region and even after it was stalled from being tabled in Rajya Sabha, announced at a meeting in Lakhimpur that they will bring the Bill if voted to power in Lok Sabha elections of 2019.

Faleiro castigated the arrogance of the BJP president who is also the chairman of NEDA (North East Democratic Alliance).

“The agenda of the RSS and the BJP is to impose its will on the people of the Northeast even when it goes against their interests and welfare,” the AICC general secretary said.

He questioned the other NEDA members like Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma as to how can he still remain a part of the BJP after Amit Shah’s open support to the Bill.

“Isn’t it a deliberate punch on the face of Mr Sangma? Doesn’t he have any self-respect? Is he then a part of the conspiracy to support the Bill clandestinely and show outside that he is opposing it?” Faleiro asked.

The AICC general secretary also questioned the moral right of all the other NEDA member parties who are still with NEDA even after Shah’s statement of swearing by the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

Faleirio said these NEDA members cannot fool the people of the Northeast with their opportunist politics. He stated that if they have any values left in them and if they are truly concerned about the cause of the people of Northeast the NEDA members would have resigned the very day Shah announced that the BJP would bring back CAB if voted to power in 2019.

The AICC general secretary also said people of the region are politically conscious and matured and they will see through these sinister designs of the BJP and their unprincipled and power hungry partners who will go to any extent to remain in power.

But it may be mentioned that the United Democratic Party – a regional party of Meghalaya – said that it has severed its ties with the NEDA.
