BSF, Meghalaya Police recovered cache of ammunition in State

SHILLONG: In a joint operation, the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Meghalaya Police on Thursday recovered a cache of ammunition from the South West Khasi Hills district.

According to the BSF, acting on a tip-off, a search operation was launched along with the Meghalaya Police in the dense forest area along a brook in the Gumaghat area, that flows from India to Bangladesh, and recovered a cache of ammunition hidden in a cavity surrounded by lime stones.

The cache of ammunition was found wrapped in a white-coloured sack which contained 92 rounds of 5.56mm, 129 rounds of 7.62mm, 160 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

"In the past, such cache was recovered by BSF in the nearby area, which was probably used by insurgent groups for extortion purpose and other illegal activities," the BSF said.

According to the BSF, the place of occurrence is located approx 900 meters inside India from the international border.

The recovered ammunition was handed over to the Gumaghat Police Station for further disposal and a FIR was lodged.

The BSF said that its intelligence network is extensively working on finding more such caches of ammunition, which are hidden by miscreants groups to materialize their nefarious designs.
