Bus carrying Odisha Fire Service personnel attacked by miscreants in Shillong

Shillong: A bus carrying personnel of the Odisha Fire Service was attacked by miscreants during the “stay off the road protest” called by the Confederation of Hynniewtrep Social Organisation (CoHSO) on Thursday evening. The Odisha Fire Service personnel are involved in the operation to rescue 15 miners who are trapped in an illegal coal pit in East Jaintia Hills district since December 13 last year.

According to reports, the incident happened at around 9 pm on Thursday night when the rescuers were returning to the camp. However according to Chief Fire Officer of the Odisha Fire Services Sukanta Sethi, who is leading the team said that no one was injured in the attack on the bus. “During the stay off the road protest while the bus was passing between Topcem cement and Star cement some miscreants had pelted stone on the bus where personnel of the Odisha Fire Service as a result of which one glass has partially damaged.

No person injured,” Sethi said. He also said that on Friday the Fire Service personnel arrived at site and soon after arrival six pumps have been operated. Meanwhile, spokesperson of the rescue operation, R Susngi informed that on Friday evening, the Coal India Limited started pumping water from the old shafts from 1pm to 5pm and total discharged of water during this period was 4, 53, 600 litres.

“The Kirloskar Brothers Limited stopped their pump from 12 noon today as the process of laying pipes to the stream is going on,” Susngi informed. Moreover, the Odhisa Fire Service started operating their pump from 1 pm and pumping continued till 4:30 pm and the total water discharged was 3, 15, 000 liters. The Indian Navy divers are utilizing their Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (UROV) in sanitizing and surveying other adjacent shafts to enable the divers to go into the mine.
