SHILLONG: The Central Puja Committee (CPC) has condemned the attack on Hindus in Bangladesh during the recently concluded Durga Puja festival.

On Sunday, the CPC Meghalaya met and noted with "grave concern and intense anguish" the recent large-scale attack on Hindu places of worship and Durga Puja pandals in Bangladesh, including indiscriminate assault on devotees during the just concluded Puja festival. The CPC has termed the attacks as premeditated.

"Launched (attacks) over different regions and districts of Bangladesh, with hundreds of people actively engaged in the Taliban style genocide and destruction, is a blatant infringement on freedom of religion and belief practised by the Hindu minorities of Bangladesh," the CPC added.

According to the CPC, the reality of discrimination in the matter of religious rights and its denial is an everyday reality (in Bangladesh), which has led not only to untold misery, but also persecution directed against Hindu minorities. The CPC, Meghalaya while strongly condemning the ghastly and unprovoked attack all over Bangladesh, has appealed to the Bangladesh government to immediately initiate concrete action against perpetrators of such heinous crime. It stated that targeting the Hindus during the Puja festival in the process has led to desecration of places of worship, including causing physical injury to hundreds and death to many devotees, including a child.

"Bangladesh government has to initiate stringent measures to bring a closure to the rising fundamentalism and intolerance, raging through the country against all minorities religious groups," the CPC said.

Meanwhile, the CPC Meghalaya has also decided to submit a memorandum through the Governor and Chief Minister of Meghalaya, drawing the immediate attention of heads of State and governments of both India and Bangladesh, urging them to immediately rein in the culprits and bring an immediate halt to the widespread violence against helpless Hindu minorities in Bangladesh.
