Shillong, May 14: A social organization has recently petitioned East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Peter S Dkhar over the selection of vendors and vendees for the border haats in the State.

According to the Citizens Foundation for Human Development (CFHD), the selection of vendors and vendees in previous years was conducted without following the prescribed norms.

The CFHD reiterated that the selection of vendors and vendees in border haats should be implemented as per the Rules and Regulations of the Border Haat Management Committee, and for locals residing within 5-km radius of the border haat.

In addition, the background checking of vendors and vendees should be conducted to ensure impartiality as well as to identify genuine locals and curb benami vendors and vendees in the haat.

The organization also said that a number of vendors should be regulated at exactly 25 and not more than that, as happened in the previous years.

CFHD also demanded that all selected vendors should display their names, photos and vending license at their respective stalls to ensure that the genuine residents of the area get the opportunity to trade their wares.
