Collective unity need of the hour, says Meghalaya Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh

SHILLONG: The Speaker of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Metbah Lyngdoh has called for collective unity from all the 60 MLAs in the State to combat COVID-19.

Lyngdoh made the statement during a meeting held at Assembly Hostel conference hall with members of both the ruling and Opposition present, on Saturday.

During the three-hour long discussion to come up with various suggestions to tackle the problem of COVID-19 in the State, Meghalya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and leader of Opposition Mukul K Sangma beside others were present.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Lyngdoh said that a collective effort is needed from all the MLAs to ensure that the spread of the virus is contained.

He also said that the elected representatives should have a responsibility to assure the people of their respective constituency that there tested positive or those under quarantine will not be stigmatized.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said ever one is working towards the goal of reducing the spread of the virus in the State.

He said at present, there are 11 active cases in the State and one died because of the virus. However, it’s important to maintain social distancing and personal hygiene.

“We are of the opinion that the number of COVID-19 will not increase further from the existing 11 active cases and soon the State will be free from this virus,” he said.

The leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister of the State Mukul Sangma said, “Each and every individual has their role to play and the main thing is social distancing and there is also a need to find a vaccine to cure patients who have tested positive.”

He also said that the fight against COVID-19 now has become a collective effort by both the ruling and Opposition members of the Assembly.

“If we are successful in combating the virus, then all the 60 MLAs should be applauded, but if we fail then everyone is accountable,” he said.
