CoMSO team meets Governor Tathagatha Roy on MRSSA

SHILLONG: A delegation of Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisation (CoMSO) leaders on Monday called on Governor Tathagatha Roy requesting him to give assent to the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security (Amendment) Ordinance, 2019.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Robertjune Kharjahrin chairman CoMSO said, “The State Government has passed and ordinance on the MRSSA. However, it has been lying pending with the Governor to get an assent for almost one month now.”

He said that there is an immediate need for the Governor to give his assent on the ordinance in view of the stand of the Centre on CAB.

“We have no proper machinism to check influx and this ordinance on MRSSA can help protect the indeginous people of our State if CAB is passed in both houses of Parliament,” he said.

When asked, he said that if the Governor continues to delay in giving his assent they will have to take up other courses of action.

He however informed that the Governor has told them that he will examine the matter.

“We are of the opinion that the said ordinance will go a long way towards achieving the aim and objective of the Act for the safety and security of the residents of the State and also for the protection of the demographic structures of the State as a whole, which has been a long and genuine aspirations of the residents of the State,” he said.

He said that the exercise of the State Government in bringing out the ordinance to the MRSSA was done after prior consultation with the legal experts and the Law department of the State and we are aware that various stakeholders (CSOs, political parties, traditional institutions, and others) were also consulted.
