SHILLONG, July 5: A delegation of two NGOs from Jaintia Hills on Thursday submitted a memorandum to the Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma in relation to the issues concerning the overall development of East Jaintia Hills district.

The two NGOs include the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the East Jaintia National Council (EJNC) central executive council and the Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) East Jaintia hills.

The president of EJNC-CEC, Sambormi Lyngdoh and Ency Shadap president HANM EJHD in the memorandum urged the state government to set up a new community and rural development block (C&RD) block, upgradation of the Khliehriat CHC to a Civil Hospital, establishment of Government College and not community college and separation of judiciary in the district.

The two leaders informed that there are presently two C&RD Block in East Jaintia Hills district one being the Wapung C&RD Block and the other being the Saipung C&RD Block and as far as the Wapung Block is concerned there are many villages falling under the Block and the distance of villages from one end of the territorial area of the block to the other is vary far.

“The distance from Tuber to Ratacgerra village is almost 100 km and as of now the Wapung Block being currently function in its Khliehrait office, the distance from Tuber to Khliehriat is about 10-16km while that from Kwator is almost 50km and the village from Ratacherra to Khliehriat is almost 80km which is posing a hurdle for the villagers to travel to Wapung Block currently functioning at Khliehriat.”

They further said that if the current C&RD Block is set up at Lumshnong the village from Tuber and Cham Cham village will have difficulty since the distance is almost 50-60km, hence it is important for the creation of a new block for the benefit of residents and villagers.

In regards to the upgradation of the Khliehriat CHC to a civil hospital, the NGO leaders said that the Khliehriat CHC is the only major health care centre but it being just a CHC lacks the proper facilities and amenities to fully render the services to the people.

“People from the district have to travel long distance to Jowai or Shillong for proper health care and the poor and underprivileged families are the one to suffer as they have to bare the cost of travel expenses,” they said.
