SHILLONG: The chief minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma flagged off the long-awaited 22.5 Megawatt hydroelectric project near Tura in the West Garo Hills district. The Ganol Hydro Power project is expected to ease the electricity problem of the state and the entire region.
Calling the inauguration of the project a historic and landmark day for the Garo Hills region, the chief minister maintained that the project has been completed by the current government with an expenditure of Rs 560 Cr. The CM also mentioned that this project will put the region on the map of power generation sites of the country.
Conrad Sangma lauded his brother James Sangma for pushing the half-done project towards completion during his tenure as the power minister of the state. The foundations of this project were laid eight years back in 2014. He also credited the completion of this project to the deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong who is also in charge of the power department.
"Ganol project was almost abandoned, the State Government had made investment but due to paucity of funds it was not completed. In 2018, when the current Government took over, it ensured that the funds were made available to restart the project. As suggested by James K. Sangma, the Government decided to release additional funds to complete the project," mentioned Conrad Sangma.
He also mentioned that the new project is a part of the large-scale infrastructure development across the state. It will supplement the growth and development of not only the Garo Hills region but also the entire state in the wrong run. The state has a current requirement of 380 MW of power.
This project utilises the Ganol river near Tura and its water by installing three Turbine - Generator units of 7.5 MW each. One was made operational during the CM's visit and the remaining two will be made operational in the next few months.
