SHILLONG: Heroine worth more than Rs 1 Cr was confiscated by the police from the Ri Bhoi district of the state of Meghalaya. It is important to note that Meghalaya goes to the election in the coming month. Two people were also arrested with regard to this huge consignment of narcotics.

A senior police official informed about the drug bust in the district. He mentioned that a woman and her aide were arrested for the possession of heroin. The action was taken in the morning hours of Thursday and their vehicle as well as their phones were confiscated by the police authorities. A case was registered against the duo and a necessary investigation is being proceeded with.

After the declaration of the legislative assembly election dates as starting February 27 for the state of Meghalaya, the Model Code of Conduct came into force. This means strict checking is being carried out at different entry points of the state as well as several key transition points within the state itself. Interdistrict movements of vehicles are also under strict monitoring for the illegal transport of cash, alcohol, narcotics or any other contraband ahead of the elections.

In a separate incident that took place in the South Garo Hills district of the state, alcohol worth about Rs 1000000 was confiscated from two goods carrier vehicles. Said to be of the Indian-made foreign liquor category, this consignment was captured because of the lack of any valid documents to justify the transportation of such a large consignment of alcohol. Two people have also been apprehended in relation to this capture.

The Chief Election Officer for the upcoming Meghalaya elections, F R Kharkongor officially wrote to the Chief Secretary of Meghalaya requesting strict compliance with the Model Code of Conduct across the hill state. He also added that the state machinery should "avoid misuse of official vehicles and issuing of advertisements at the cost of the public exchequer".
