SHILLONG: The All Meghalaya Contractors and Suppliers Association (AMC&CA) has expressed its opposition to the State government's decision to implement all government project in a package system and turnkey basis. The AMC&CA members on Thursday submitted a representation to the Chief Minister with their justifications as to why they are against the government's move.

"We would like to express our strong dissapointment with the decision and practice of the government to club and combine all projects in one package or in turnkey basis," stated the representation.

They alleged that this system will encourage all contractors and suppliers and companies to undertake all projects of the State," adding that ''the system will deprive the local contractors to take up the works within the State''.

Elaborating further at a press confference held in Shillong on Thursday, Association president B Nongbri also said that the clubbing and the package system does not have the financial capacity to handle the package work.

He added that only split allocation of works will help the local enterprenuers who have been handling the projects of various department succesfully for many years.

In their demands, the Association members also asked the government with reference to the bid document on any project as to where the local contractors are eligible to execute the work. T

he projects should be addressed logically so that enough relaxation is given in order to allow the local contractors to partipate in a a competitive manner, he said.

By reducing the bid margin of the packages, the local contractors and suppliers can be accomodated; and that will give them an opportunity to grow in capacity and aquire the credentials by maintaining the quality of of work as per the guidelines of the departments concerned", stated Nong.
