Coronavirus scare: Seven from Meghalaya were in Tablighi Jamaat congregation

SHILLONG: People from Meghalaya recently attended the religious congregation of the Tablighi Jamaat at Hazrat Nizamuddin Markaz in Delhi earlier this month which has caused a huge coronavirus scare.

As per figures released by Shillong Markaz, at least seven persons had attended the congregation.

In a letter addressed to Lumdiengjri police station, a member of the Shillong Markaz, Anwar Ali informed the officer-in-charge of the police station that a few people who are members of the Shillong Markaz had visited the Nizamuddin Markaz in Delhi before the lockdown was announced.

Ali said that the Shillong Markaz felt it necessary to intimate the administration so that it can take necessary steps to handle the situation.

He informed that these seven people have been stuck in Delhi since the 21-day lockdown was announced in the country.

“As the current situation of COVID-19 outbreak has occurred, it is our responsibility to co-operate with the administration,” Ali said in the letter to the police.

Meanwhile, the State government is taking steps by asking such persons to voluntarily visit the nearest government hospital or by calling helpline number 108.

It may be mentioned that Meghalaya till filing of this report has not had any COVID-19 positive case.
