COVID-19 Lockdown: Parents jittery over opening of schools in Meghalaya

SHILLONG: Many parents in Meghalaya are asking questions if the government will resume or continue with the closure of educational institutions in Meghalaya.

Speaking to a few parents, who didn’t want to reveal their names, posed several questions and one of them is concerned that if educational institutions are allowed to be opened next month, will there be any safety concerns for their children as COVID-19 has penetrated the State and one doctor died because of the virus.

They also expressed their concern that if schools and colleges are reopened next month or the month after that, what assurance can the government give to ensure that their children will be safe from the virus as once educational institutions are reopened, there will be many students in one classroom, hence there will be no social distancing.

The parents also opinioned that even if the educational institutions are to open in early June, how will the teachers be able to complete the courses of the students.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui informed that the government will soon sit and discuss this issue with various educational institutions, most probably after April 20.

“In this regard the government will have to examine the situation properly in the coming days but as of right now, the government is confident that it will win the war against COVID-19 and bring back normalcy in the entire State,” he said.
