DC Matsiewdor War Nongbri warns against fake news about COVID-19 on social media

SHILLONG: Authorities in Meghalaya on Monday have taken serious note of the spread of fake news especially on social media about COVID-19.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Matsiewdor War Nongbri in a statement said that despite an appeal that was made on March 9, there continues to be a series of false and misleading information being circulated on social media and other public platforms regarding coronavirus.

“This has created more unwanted panic and worry among the public,” the Deputy Commissioner said.

According to her, while it is important to stay alert and updated, she, however, warned that strong and befitting action as per law will be taken against those who spread and cause unnecessary panic among the general public.

“The Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills district has appealed to the citizens to refrain from posting any unfounded information and to adhere and comply with all Advisories issued by the Integrated District Surveillance Programme, Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Meghalaya that has been widely circulated to the public,” Nongbri said.

Meanwhile, the State government has decided to close 17 departments with immediate effect till March 31.

These departments include Arts and Culture, Border Areas, Cabinet Affairs Department, Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Cooperation Department, Fisheries Department, Finance (AF/PR/PC), Home (Passport) Department, Housing Department, Legal Metrology, Programme Implementation & Evaluation Department, Personnel & Administrative Reforms (AR Cell/Service Rules Cell), Textiles Department, Secretariat Administration Department (Record), Soil & Water Conservation Department, Sports & Youth Affairs Department and Tourism Department.
