SHILLONG: The Central government under the newly approved Central Sector Scheme of North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme” (NESIDS) has sanctioned five projects for Meghalaya.

Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a programme here on Saturday, the Secretary Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Naveen Verma said that this new Central sector scheme for the region will focus in five major sectors.

“The scheme will focus in areas of physical infrastructure relating to water supply, power and connectivity, enhancing tourism and social infrastructure relating to primary and secondary sectors of education and health.

This scheme will fund to complete the ongoing projects under the Non-Lapsable Central Pool Resources (NLCPR) scheme and to take up projects of around Rs.1600 crore under the 100 per cent new centrally funded scheme – NESIDS.

Under the scheme guidelines of NESIDS, 100 per cent centrally funding is provided to the State governments of the North Eastern Region.

“Meghalaya will have schemes for power supply in Shillong, water supply in Sohra, and construction of a road from Mawsmai to Shella and another road to Mawsynram (all in East Khasi Hills district).

According to Verma, once the schemes are agreed upon then the DPRs will be prepared by the State governments and the State Level Empowered Committee (SLEC) will approve it and after approval, it will be sent to the DoNER Ministry for sanctioning.

The Secretary DoNER also said that under the scheme only big projects will be funded.
