Guwahati: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma yesterday convened a meeting with the State Transport department in the presence of Minister S. Dhar, to discuss and review key projects to be set up in the State. In the meeting, the Chief Minister was informed by officials that Shillong-Delhi direct flights will soon be operational.

"Direct flights from Shillong to Delhi will be operational from September end. Tender has been finalised and LOI is being issued to the successful bidder", Sangma wrote on Twitter after the meeting.

The meeting discussed the setting up of the Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR) in the State. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has a scheme for setting up one Model Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR) in the State for the improvement in road safety.

The officials of the State Transport department apprised the Chief Minister that the department has land available at Wahiajer, West Jaintia Hills district, and at Jengjal, West Garo Hills district, donated by the community.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared for both the locations to be submitted to the MoRTH for funding. Inspection and Certification Centres (I&CC) are required to be set up for the issue of fitness certificates for all categories of vehicles and for undergoing mandatory idle emission tests.

The Central Government provides 100% capital investment towards construction of buildings, the establishment of utilities, and the test equipment/lane for the centre. A typical I/C centre consisting of 4 lanes requires a land area of approximately 3 acres. The State Transport department is in the process of identifying suitable land for the setting up of an Inspection and Certification Centre in the State.

During the course of the meeting, the need for regular and reliable helicopter services was also discussed. The Transport Department is in the process of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for setting up of heliports at Umsawli East Khasi Hills District and at Doldegiri, West Garo Hills District, to submit the same to the Ministry of Civil Aviation for necessary funding.
