SHILLONG: The dorbar shong of Mawryngkneng has prepared a 10 acre land to be handed to the government for setting up a regulated market at Pomlahier.

In this connection, Minister of Agriculture Banteidor Lyngdoh informed that the department has inspected the land in the presence of local leaders of the village dorbar of Mawryngkneng including Deputy Commissioner East Khasi Hills, Matsiewdor War Nongbri besides other officers. The Minister also lauded the decision of Dorbar Shnong Mawryngkneng to hand over the land to the government for setting up the market which will greatly benefit the local farmers.

He said the area is in an ideal location and the matter has been taken up with the State government and the issue will be discussed to speed up the process in turning the land into a regulated market at the earliest.

Meanwhile, Peter J Lawai, Sordar of Mawryngkneng, expressed his gratitude towards the Minister and to the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government led by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for taking up issues concerning the welfare of farmers seriously and for approving the Meghalaya State Agricultural Produce and Livestock Marketing (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020.

"This plot of land measuring 10 acre which we have proposed to the government is ideal especially as it is located in the centre of neighbouring villages from Jainta hills, East Khasi and Ri-Bhoi and farmers can bring their produce here for the traders to buy their vegetables," he said.

He said the region is still heavily dependent on farming and because of the present situation due to COVID-19 and the lockdown it has placed huge problems for them. "With the settings up of this regulated market in this area it will benefit the farmers from here and neighbouring villages also," he said.
