Shillong: Meghalaya Assembly Speaker and United Democratic Party (UDP) president, Dr Donkupar Roy on Saturday rued the use of money power during elections.
Speaking at the closing function of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of another regional party of the state – Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), Dr Roy said that when he started his career as a politician no money was used to influence voters’ choice.
“However after, 2003 suddenly money power came during elections and many voted for political parties that had money,” the UDP president said.
He also pointed out that similarly, businessmen began to fight elections thereby tilting the scales in their favour.
Dr Roy said that he does not have an issue with a businessman fighting elections but urged them to stop from furthering their businesses after winning the polls.
“I always advise such persons to give up their business when they become MLA and teach someone else to be an entrepreneur,” the UDP president said.
He also said that the biggest drawback for the regional parties in the state is the presence of many such groups professing to further the cause of the indigenous communities of the state.
Some of the regional parties of the state like the People’s Demand Implementation Convention (PDIC) and the Meghalaya Democratic Party (MDP) had to wind up since these parties lacked support base.
Dr Roy pointed out that many attempts at unification have failed even as he said, “I appeal not to encourage the formation of new regional parties.”
Meanwhile, the UDP president also regretted the fact that many candidates especially from the regional parties tend to desert the party after winning the elections.
Reminding that the Autonomous District Councils polls are near, he said, “Those who will win from the parties they are contesting please remain faithful and do not leave it,” Dr Roy said.
It has been noticed that in the Autonomous District Councils of Meghalaya, due to the absence of anti-defection law, Members of District Council frequently defect from one party to another.
