Drop phrase ‘stupid people’ from book on Ri-Bhoi

SHILLONG, Feb 23: The residents of Ri Bhoi district on Friday demanded that the phrase ‘stupid people’ should be removed from the book which was released on the occasion of the 25th silver jubilee of the district last year. According to the book, the word ‘Bhoi’ means ‘people living in low lands of lower hills’ as was taken by the Khynriams, the Prs and the Wars to signify ‘stupid people’. Even at present many still think that the word ‘Bhoi’ means ‘stupid’. Speaking to reporters, a resident of Nongpoh R Kharpan said, “This word has greatly affected the mindset of the people of Ri Bhoi and it should be removed immediately.” He demanded that the people responsible for releasing the book should apologise to the people of Ri Bhoi.
