Durga Puja festivities grip Shillong

SHILLONG: Durga Puja celebrations in Meghalaya has started with Maha Saptami.

Devotees were seen visiting the various puja pandals in Shillong on Saturday.

There are as many as 242 community Durga Puja in Meghalaya which include 118 in Khasi Hills districts, 14 in Jaiñtia Hills and 110 in Garo Hills districts. The Central Puja Committee (CPC) in Meghalaya has issued advisory to all puja and mandir Committees to adhere to guidelines in order to ensure environment friendly Durga Puja celebration.

Women and children were seen pandal hopping dressed in attires bought for the occasion.

On Saturday, there was traffic congestion all over the city even as the situation may get worse in the coming days.

There was a jam from Mawiong to Garikhana as vehicles were seen making their way into the city.

The Shillong Traffic Police (STP) has imposed temporary “No Entry” in and around Shillong city only during the Durga Puja celebration from October 5 to 8. The STP warned that violators will be penalised accordingly under appropriate section of Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act, 2019.
