E-meet on agriculture and allied sectors in Meghalaya

MEGHALAYA: To provide the platform to discuss and interact with the latest technology and innovation in the field of agriculture and allied sectors, the National KVK e-meet on 'Technologies in Agriculture and Allied Sectors: The Current Scenario' was organized by the Department of Rural Development, USTM, Meghalaya in collaboration with the School of Agro and Rural Technology (SART), IIT, Guwahati from June 21 to 23.

The event started with an inaugural address by Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor, USTM, Meghalaya. Hoque extended his warm welcome to the participants and resource persons of the meet.

Professor A. C. Talukdar the keynote addresser of the e- meet and Dean, School of Social Science and Humanities, USTM has remarkably appreciated the effort of the Department of Rural Development and addressed the important aspects of agriculture and its necessity in the present situation. He added that "This is a platform to bring and gather the distinguished scientists across the country to present and to make the understanding current scenario of technology in agriculture."

Dr P. K. Gupta, Senior Scientist & Head, Director, National Horticultural Research and Development Foundation, KVK, Delhi, highlighted the present scenario of onion in the country and suitable varieties. Dr Shatabisha Sarkar, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK, Sepahijala, Tripura, spoke of the role of KVK in uplifting food processing in the NE Region. Dr Swagat Ghose, Subject Matter Specialist (Fisheries) SSKVK, RKMVERI, West Bengal, highlighted the Integrated Rural Development through different fish farming technologies for rural farmers. Dr Sudip Mitra, Associate Professor, School of Agro & Rural Technology, IIT Guwahati enlightened the participants on agro-ecotechnology and climate-smart agriculture. He spoke about the impact of climate change on soil health and the shifting trend of agriculture. He also discussed the way plant and soil processes affected by climate.

A vote of thanks was presented by Dr Papiya Dutta, Head, Department of Rural Development, USTM, who expressed her gratitude to the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor for the constant guidance and encouragement to organise a unique and innovative webinar by collaborating with institutes of repute. She also thanked the Registrar, Academic Registrar and Dean School of Social Science and Humanities of USTM for constant support with a note of appreciation to the speakers, participants and team members who contributed towards holding the event a successful one.

The e-meet had a good interactive session with many queries from the participants. It was attended by students and faculty members of different parts of India, stated a release.
