East Khasi Hills district administration decided to lift Curfew in Shillong

SHILLONG: With the situation returning back to normal in Shillong, the East Khasi Hills district administration had decided to lift the curfew from Sunday.

No incidents were reported from many parts of the State even as police said that the situation is normal and under close watch.

In an order passed on Saturday evening, Deputy Commissioner Matsiewdor War Nongbri said, “In view of the prevailing law and order situation, curfew will be totally lifted in the whole of Shillong agglomeration and adjoining areas from 5 am Sunday.”

However, in the Sohra Civil sub-division, curfew will still be in place.

According to authorities, curfew in areas under Sohra police station will be relaxed from 7 am to 8 pm on March 8, and will be extended again from 8 pm of the same day until further orders.

In Ichamati, curfew has been relaxed from 8 am to 2 pm on Sunday and will be extended again from 2 pm on the same day until further orders.

Meanwhile, all areas under Shella Police Station, Tyllap Police Outpost and Bholaganj Police Check Post, curfew has been relaxed with effect from 8 am to 4 pm on Sunday and will be extended again from 4 pm of Sunday until further orders.

Shillong had witnessed violence in past one week following clashes between the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) activists and non-tribals after the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act meeting at Ichamati village on February 28.

KSU member Lurshai Hynniewta, 35, of Sohra, had succumbed to his injuries following the clash.

Eight persons, Sushan Das, Ranjit Baidya, Bijit Baidya, Kanal Baidya, Sajol Das, Joy Sharma, Indromohan Sharma, and Rajesh Sharma, have been arrested in the case.

Vegetable vendor, Rupchand Dewan, a native from Assam’s Barpeta district was stabbed to death by masked men while eight others were injured in the stabbing spree incident at Iewduh market.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma said that security measures that are in place will continue till the board examination ends.

According to Conrad, the Government will always ensure that all measures are put in place to ensure the safety and security of citizens of the state. “We are also concerned about the way the life of the citizens which has been affected. The livelihood of a lot of farmers who come to sell vegetables at Shillong and different kinds of people whose livelihood has been affected in view of the different kinds of curbs which had been imposed,” the Chief Minister said. Conrad also informed that the government is trying to balance out and ensure that mechanisms are in place and minimum inconvenience is caused to the people.
