Guwahati: The Shella Unit of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) has recently discovered that many "illegal traders" are plying their trade at the Hat Shella in East Khasi Hills district and threatened "strict action" against these violators.

Silas Ora, the publicity secretary of the KSU-Shella Unit said based on information received, members of the union led by the general secretary, Ferrybert Dolloi immediately visited the market and found that many illegal traders have started carrying out trades without any proper documents which one must obtain from the concerned authority if one wishes to.

Ora, in an official statement, said that such illegal traders were immediately asked to stop their activities in the market and at the same issued a strict warning against such illegal activities in the popular market.

The KSU's publicity secretary further informed that the body has decided to intensify checking against illegal trade activities within the jurisdiction of the village.

The Khasi Students Union has been keeping a close watch on the activities in the Shella region amid the ongoing pandemic situation in Meghalaya. Notably, the district of East Khasi Hills has been hit worst by the pandemic.

Earlier this year, the tribal body accused BSF personnel based at Shella of "blatant violation of health protocols" and endangering the health safety of the local residents.

In a statement issued in June, the president KSU Shella unit, Pynkmenlang Sanmiet alleged that BSF personnel is moving freely in the Shella Hat on Saturdays without wearing a mask or maintaining social distancing.

"It is frightening that the BSF personnel are moving about and buying materials in Hat Shella" in complete disregard for the health safety of the civilian population.

The KSU has further urged the BSF to refrain from moving around carelessly defying the government protocols. "We do not know who is a potential carrier", he said.
