EKHLTWA Calls for Boycott of Non-Local Cabs in Shillong

SHILLONG: Following the assault on two local taxi drivers in the city, the East Khasi Hills Local Taxi Welfare Association (EKHLTWA) has announced a boycott against non-local cab drivers in the capital city of Meghalaya. The association announced this decision after Meghalaya Police was able to arrest five individuals in relation to the incident.

The president of the association, Wandonbok Jyrwa thanked the state police for listening to the demands of the locals and arresting the miscreants involved in the incident. He also mentioned that necessary steps need to be taken to prevent such incidents in the future. The general secretary of the organisation called for a ban on the allowing of non-local to ply in the capital city.

It can be noted that the organisation has been demanding action against the non-local cab drivers who have been operating in the city alleging that the non-local drivers charge high fares.

Another important point to note is that a large number of drivers from the region also operate from various locations in Guwahati and whenever such conflicts happen in either Shillong or Guwahati, the same is reflected in the other city as well.

The state government of Meghalaya has however not given any reply regarding this demand yet.

Previously, on Thursday, Bashai Syiem (25) from Mawpdang and Iohborlang Kharsohnoh (27) from Jongksha were reportedly assaulted in the Khyndailad locality of Shillong. The association demanded an immediate arrest of the miscreants and gave the police a one-day ultimatum. Following this, a police team arrested five people from Guwahati on Friday. Details regarding the identities of the accused as well as the charges against them have not been known yet.

Drivers from the neighbouring state have often complained that they have been assaulted and cars vandalised. These incidents became more evident during the previous conflict between the two states at a border location.
